A Simple Declaration or Merely Out of Touch? The Hue Named 'Cloud Dancer' Chosen as Pantone's 2026 Colour.

Hi there! I can't wait to find out what color will define 2026. What's the scoop?

Prepare yourself, as every year for over two decades, Pantone announces a Color of the Year. This pick is a reflection of the current cultural mood—influencing everything from our emotions and fashion choices to how we design our living spaces. Last year's selection was the deep beige "Mocha Mousse," preceded by the gentle and peachy "Peach Fuzz."

The new choice, though, is particularly baffling. It is "Cloud Dancer," described by a "ethereal and neutral white."

Laurie Pressman, vice-president of the Pantone Color Institute, stated that it is "an essential foundational hue … allowing all colors to be highlighted."

Well, Cloud Dancer sounds… wait, white? Are they joking? Is white even a real color?

How does one characterize the color of clouds? Milk? While some consider white as a color, all color is essentially a range of visible light. It's present in a box of crayons, so in everyday terms the answer is yes.

Whether Pantone is being provocative is trickier to figure out. The company states, Cloud Dancer pairs effortlessly with other colors, provides a calm backdrop, makes a minimalist statement, and projects quiet sophistication.

Responses from critics, however, has been less complimentary. A number of observers have declared Pantone of being completely "out of touch." Style expert Mandy Lee described it as "underwhelming." Some have even compared it with implied endorsement of certain ideologies seen in recent advertising.

Okay, hopefully they're cheerfully oblivious that now is a sensitive time to be explicitly championing whiteness... Therefore, how might someone not exactly adjacent to a catwalk use this news in everyday routine? I just painted my ceiling with white, does that count?

Yes, that certainly counts. So would your earbuds, sink, or favorite mug.

It's interesting you mention catwalks, as many this season's presentations have been exceptionally bright, featuring eco-friendly materials on the stage.

All-white outfits were present, like always, in high-fashion looks—from elegant blouses to sleek suits. Celebrities and public figures have also been seen in monochromatic white ensembles at major events.

On the bright side is: chances are you already possess items in this "discreet" color of the year. In the words of Pressman, Cloud Dancer "represents a greener option for the environmentally aware," which essentially suggests not having to buy anything new at all.

SO, a fashion trend for the truly minimalist. A fresh start, if you will. A cocoon of serene simplicity amid the noise. Alright, I'm on board. Will you be creating a all-white theme for your personal style?

Definitely not. Have you ever tried to remove red wine stains from a white shirt? I could do without extra stain-removal drama in 2026.

I do own a pair of once-white sandals, and this classic footwear are always in vogue.
